Gareth Asher

For the second week in a row I saw a new singer/songwriter who really blew me away. Hopefully you recall that last week that was Mike Garrigan and Mark Kano. Well this week it was Gareth Asher. Gareth has a wonderful and powerful voice, commanding stage presence, talent with a guitar, and he ain't so bad on the piano either.. Off stage he's a real nice guy as well - easy to approach and loves to talk about his trade. So do yourself a favor and be sure to say howdy to him. You'll be glad you did.

I'll have to keep an eye out for Gareth shows in the future. As he's from nearby Atlanta I'm sure I will be able to see him again soon.

I took a lot of photos of this show and posted more than I usually do on the site - here's the link to see photos from the show.

Hot House Hefftones

I tried to figure out what a Hefftone was and all I found was some very confusing mathematics concerning calculations for hole spacing in making an in tune flute. So I assume it has something to do with musical notes.

But I did see first hand what a Hot House Hefftone was this Saturday night at The Evening Muse. It's a unique 5 piece band that plays some swing, jazz and a little samaba music. They had a really nice sound - different than most of what you hear today, which was actually nice.

I did get a few photos - which can be viewed at this link.

Lindsey Horne

The last time I saw Lindsey Horne perform was her CD release party in 2004. Yeah - it has been a while. So when I saw that she was performing at The Evening Muse Saturday night I had to go. Lindsey performed most of the songs from her last CD, still with that sultry voice. She said she's working on new material and hopes to have a new CD out soon.

I was glad to be able to get some better photos than the one's I took almost 4 years ago. Here's a link to them. Hope you enjoy.

Mike Garrigan & Mark Kano

Two of North Carolinas better singer/songwriters performed for 90 minutes at The Evening Muse on Saturday night - Mike Garrigan and Mark Kano combined to entertain a full house with their talented blend of guitar prowess and equally powerful vocals.
These are two very talented musicians to say the least! It's easy to see why they have such a large following of music fans. They now have one more..
These two have performed together for quite some time now, originally as part of the band "Athenaeum" until Dec 2004 and subsequently as "mg4". The whole band will perform August 16th at Amos' Southend here in Charlotte. As good as their show was Saturday night, I can't wait to see the August show!
Photos from the show can be seen at my Musicians Portfolio.

Mike also does a couple of PodCasts each month which can be gotten to via his website.
Thanks to Laurie Koster for highlighting this show for me via her weekly "Charlotte Event Calendar".

Sequoyah Prep School

During the day Saturday I was pondering what to do for my Saturday night. As usual I read through Laurie Kosters "Charlotte Events Calendar" to see what was going on this evening.
As a music fan, I try to see performers that I haven't seen before. Joe Kuhlman's Evening Muse is one of my favorite venues and Laurie had posted a couple of shows featuring performers I had not seen before. One of them was a rock band out of Florence, South Carolina named "Sequoyah Prep School". I went out to their MySpace page and listened to a couple of their tunes. They really sounded good, so I decided to go ahead and check them out even if they were performing the late show.

Turns out they are even better live than their MySpace tunes led me to believe. A very smooth rock-n-roll band featuring three guitars, a bass player and a drummer, these guys blend very well. I think the positive difference with this band is they have a very good lead singer in Justin Osborne. His pop-rock sounding voice brings harmony to a talented group of musicians whose blend results in a very credible rock sound.

The band members are: Justin Osborne, West Jones, Joel Ivy, Jordan Hicks, and Johnnie Matthews. Hopefully you can catch these rockers at a venue near you.

A few photos from the show can be seen via my Musicians Portfolio.

Asylum Street Spankers

Thursday night featured the Asylum Street Spankers at The Evening Muse. Avery unique group of musicians who are extremely entertaining in the musical style as well as lyrical content. FUN is the word that describes this show.
In looking at their myspace page I saw that they are from the Austin, TX area and are pretty much fully booked through the remainder of the year. After seeing their show I can see why and I have several friends I will be calling to be sure they are aware of the upcoming visit by the Asylum Street Spankers. Its a show I know they will not want to miss.
I had fun taking photos of the show as the band was having a good time as well - it shows on their faces. Intense musical performance coupled with intense fun! I hope you enjoy the photos too! They can be viewed at this link.

Cheers,
